Community assists in bringing criminals to justice

Komatipoort Police thanked the community for Orlando for their assistance with the apprehension of two suspects.

KOMATIPOORT –  The local police station’s spokesman, Const Natacia Mbuyane, said detectives responded to a tip-off of the planned stoning and burning of a wanted suspect on Monday. Upon arrival at the scene, detectives were outnumbered and called for backup.

“We responded and found hundreds of residents surrounding the detectives and the suspect. We were able to rescue them,” Mbuyane said.

The suspect was wanted for robbery and murder committed in the Lebombo mountains and surrounds. According to Mbuyane some crimes are never reported because most of the people living there are illegal immigrants. She urged victims of crimes to report them to the police.

“With the help of the public we can build stronger and better cases against criminals and put them away permanently.”

The suspect is currently in police custody for his own safety.

The community of Orlando also assisted police in apprehending a suspected drug dealer.

“Community members brought a Nigerian man, suspected of dealing in drugs, to the police station,” Mbuyane reported.  The accused was arrested for being an illegal immigrant, due to the fact that his visa had expired.

The station commander thanked the community for their efforts and urged them to contact the police immediately when they find an illegal immigrant or suspect that someone is involved in illegal activities. “They must not tamper with the evidence so that a strong case can be built during preparations for court,” Meiring said.
