Eleven ANC supporters died in a bus accident on Sunday, following the party's launch of its election manifesto.

MBOMBELA – The ANC Provincial Executive Committee in Mpumalanga have expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and relatives of the 11 comrades from Gauteng who lost their lives in a horrific bus accident over the weekend.

They had joined thousands of other ANC members at the launch of the party’s Election Manifesto in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

“Our excitement and happiness from this progressive event was shortlived as the sad news of the passing on of these comrades reached us,” spokesman Mr Thulari Madileng said in a statement on Monday.

“We would also like to wish a speedy recovery to all the other comrades who got injured owing to this accident. May the souls of the departed comrades rest in peace.”

A joint operation centre has been established to coordinate information regarding the accident, in which 59 people were also injured  when the bus overturned on the N1 between Ventersburg and Winsburg on Sunday.
