Four men arrested for alleged rhino hunting

On the Toyota bakkie belonging to the Warrent Officer, a service pistol was found between the seats.

Calcutta – Yesterday police arrested four males including a warrant officer (37) stationed at the local SAPS.

The police were following information that a blue Corsa bakkie was allegedly travelling from Mkhuhlu to Huttington Trust with firearms to hunt rhinos at the Kruger National Park. The members then saw the suspected Corsa and a white Toyota Hilux Raider stopping on the side of the road.

In searching the Corsa, they found a hunting rifle wrapped in cloth, a homemade silencer, five live rounds, a make-shift knife and a black iron axe.

On the Toyota bakkie belonging to the W/O, a service pistol was found between the seats. He was arrested with other three suspects aged 34, 47 and 37 for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They will appear in the Mkhuhlu Magistrate Court soon.
