MARLOTH PARK – A giraffe and its herd were crossing the road when a vehicle approached the group. It is suspected that the giraffe got a fright and slipped, and then fell on top of the vehicle. It is reported that the vehicle was travelling slowly. The occupants were badly shaken.
The Marloth Park Honorary Rangers were notified of the incident and quickly responded. The giraffe suffered a broken leg and due to the severity of its injuries, the rangers decided to euthanise it.
The incident did the rounds on social media, with several residents from Marloth Park noting that traffic rules had to be enforced more strictly and that the speed limit be reduced.
Property owners have been lobbying for speed humps in the main street for some time. A few months ago, they erected their own speed-limit signs and road markings in an effort to curb speeding in the park and to prevent accidents involving wildlife.
