A fishing trip with his two young boys ended in tragedy on Sunday, December 29, when a man was stabbed and killed with an assegai.

John Peter Grobler (46), also known as JP, was attacked late afternoon while fishing with his two sons and father-in-law.

According to Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, spokesperson for the Limpopo police, the group was fishing at the popular Tubatse Dam near Steelpoort when six men, armed with spears and a golf club, attacked them.Grobler was attacked as he was sitting in his camping chair.

Sergeant Montle Mahlatse, the investigating officer from Burgersfort, said Grobler was stabbed in the back and possibly died of internal bleeding.

But he apparently fought back and managed to get his handgun from his bakkie.

He fired a shot, and the attackers fled.

Although badly injured, Grobler drove off with his sons, aged nine and 13, as well as his father-in-law.
Mahlatse said Grobler collapsed behind the wheel at some stage. His father-in-law, whose name had not been released yet, drove to the nearby Lanex Village for help.

When the paramedics arrived, Grobler was declared dead.

Mahlatse did not want to confirm the names of the two boys. “They are still very traumatised, and I will only take their statements later.”

Grobler’s funeral will be held at the Apostolic Faith Mission church in Steelpoort on Friday, January 3.
Mahlatse says a manhunt was launched to track down the six attackers.
