UPDATE | Witness tells of horrific elephant incident at Kruger’s Malelane Gate

According to the witness, the victim was visiting his daughter and grandkids who live in Malalane.

One of the people who witnessed an elephant trampling Shaik Adam Shabir Ammed (59) from Piet Retief at the Malelane Gate yesterday afternoon, January 25, says the victim was trying to save his two grandchildren.

“The children were next to the bridge when Ammed saw the elephant close to them. He rushed over to save them, and it attacked him,” said the witness who asked to remain anonymous.
He also claimed the man had visited his daughter who stays at Malalane with her kids.

Some of the witness’s information was concurred by the provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdlhuli. “Preliminary investigations suggest the children were taking pictures next to the bridge. The victim saw an elephant behind the trees and rushed over to save the two kids. That is when it attacked and killed him.”
Mdlhuli said the police have registered an inquest case for investigations.

Lowvelder managed to track down Ammed’s family. A close relative, Mohamed Shah, said the family is devastated about the incident.
“It is, however, not the right time to talk about this matter. We are still in shock,” Shah said.

The Kruger National Park’s spokesperson, Isaac Phaahla, said the victim and his family had been day visitors in the park.
“We are waiting for the official results of the investigation and will not presume anything,” said Phaahla.
