Marco Schalekamp briefly appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court today, August 21, neatly dressed in a buttoned shirt and trousers, his neck cast removed.

His case was postponed to October 23 for further investigation, as the ballistic reports were not yet ready to be presented.

State prosecutor Mbongeni Magagula told the court that the investigating officer, Sergeant Mxolisi Keis, confirmed certain aspects, including video footage and recordings, still needed to be obtained.

Schalekamp’s attorney, Leendert Viljoen, asked the court if the defence could disclose its report, noting that they had forensic experts also investigating the case.

The state responded that they had not previously encountered such a request and indicated that an application of disclosure may be required for the defence to access the contents of the docket.

Magistrate Sifiso Mabilane advised the defence to approach the High Court with such an application.

Schalekamp stands accused of premeditated murder and attempted murder following the fatal shooting of Pieter Burger and the wounding of Arno van Niekerk near the White River Rugby Club in the early hours of June 5.

Schalekamp himself sustained gunshot wounds in the shoot-out.
