DD Mabuza’s R44.7m insurance payout tied up in Mpumalanga High Court

The late deputy president David Mabuza’s R44.7m insurance payout is being contested in court by his estranged wife and daughter.

Nonhlahla Patience Mnisi, who was regarded as the late deputy president David Dabede Mabuza’s wife at the time of his death in July, has been interdicted from benefitting from the millions he left behind in insurance cover.

Mabuza, popularly known as “DD” or “The Cat,” had an insurance policy with Alexander Forbes Financial Services worth more than R44.7 million.

His estranged customary wife, Emunah Silinda (formerly Ruth Funi Silinda), and their daughter, 25-year-old Tamara Silinda, are now claiming a share of his estate.

Tamara, a first-year student at the University of Cape Town, is seeking financial support for clothing, food and tuition.

In court papers seen by Lowvelder, Tamara argues that her father’s support should continue as before his passing.

She has demanded that Alexander Forbes pay more than R127 000 for tuition and at least R40 000 per month for her upkeep in the interim.

“I bring this application seeking to enforce my right as a beneficiary of a retirement fund held by the second respondent (Alexander Forbes Financial Services),” she stated in the application.

The case is scheduled to be heard on an urgent basis in the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court on Tuesday, September 23.

Respondents in the matter include Mnisi, Alexander Forbes, the Master of the High Court, the South African Presidency, the Government Pensions Administration Agency, several of Mabuza’s children, family members and other interested parties.

Adv DJ Sibuyi, founder and owner of Mthunzi Law Chambers, confirmed that he is representing the applicants.

“I cannot divulge the merits of the case as it is set to be heard in the High Court,” Sibuyi said.
