Two people escaped unharmed after their vehicle overturned in a multi-car accident in Mbombela.

The two occupants of a light delivery vehicle (LDV) escaped unharmed after it overturned in an accident involving two other bakkies at the corner of Dr Enos Mabuza Drive and Kaapsehoop Road in Mbombela on Saturday, November 1.

Those who were in the overturned LDV were safely extricated and treated at the scene.

An eyewitness said that a fourth vehicle, also a bakkie, was damaged during the accident.

The video shows that the front-end of the LDV was already damaged before the driver lost control and overturned.

A Volkswagen Amarok, which is suspected to have caused the accident, is then seen speeding away from the scene.

The spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Moeti Mmusi, said an investigation into the accident is under way.

He did not confirm the allegations that the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident fled the scene.

“If the driver is found and the allegations are confirmed to be true, he or she could face charges of hit-and-run as well as reckless and negligent driving. The individual may be fined or imprisoned,” he said.

“We urge motorists involved in accidents to remain at the scene unless their safety is at risk. Even then, they must report the incident to the nearest police station immediately.
