UPDATE: Land Rover owner’s insurer explains claim outcome
The insurer acknowledged that an independent assessor and forensic specialist reviewed Coetsee’s claim.
In a desperate attempt to get answers from Jaguar Land Rover, Pierre Coetsee’s recent bold protest, in which he left the charred remains of his 2023 Land Rover Defender outside the dealership, has led to a response from his insurer Momentum Insure.
According to Funeka Ngewu, Momentum’s executive head for claims: procurement and legal, Coetsee submitted his claim to them on October 22, 2025.

He confirmed that an independent assessor and a forensic specialist were appointed to review the claim and determine the cause of the incident.
“Their findings indicated that the incident resulted from a cause not covered under the policy. Momentum Insure’s standard comprehensive motor vehicle policy covers sudden and unforeseen events, and excludes mechanical, electrical, or electronic breakdown or defects, as set out in the policy documentation accepted by Mr Coetsee. We provided the specialist forensic report to him. We rejected the claim on December 12, 2025, as the incident falls outside our policy coverage. Thus, the claims process with Momentum Insure has been finalised.”

He acknowledged that Coetsee had subsequently lodged a complaint with the National Financial Ombudsman and that Momentum Insure is co-operating fully with their review and will abide by their determination once complete.

“We also remain open to considering any new information or evidence that may prove the incident falls within the scope of the cover provided to Mr Coetsee,” Ngewu said.
