Ama Wheelies shift their focus to road safety

According to him many of the Ama Wheelies members are paralysed due to car accidents and many spinal injuries could have been prevented if safety belts were worn.

LYDENBURG – This past weekend Ama Wheelies held their annual road safety awareness walk and fund-raiser which was a great success.

According to the chairman of Ama Wheelies, Mr Moses Molombo, the aim of the walk was to encourage the community to wear safety belts, respect the rules of the road, and to raise funds.

“Our slogan for the day was ‘Buckle up’ as we didn’t want new members in wheelchairs,” Molombo said. “We embarked on this campaign to encourage the community to always wear safety belts – even when going for short trips to the shops.”

According to him many of the Ama Wheelies members are paralysed due to car accidents and many spinal injuries could have been prevented if safety belts were worn.

Ama Wheelies also handed over a petition to Mr Michael Ncongwane, executive mayor of Thaba Chweu, requesting him to instruct the chief of the traffic department to be strict in enforcing the law on the roads.

Ama Wheelies would like to express their gratitude to Longtom SPAR for sponsoring food for the event, Laske Nakke for a venue, Lydenburg Absa for the money boxes they provided and Lydenburg FNB for their donation.

They would also like to thank Hoërskool Lydenburg for their financial support as well as Mashishing High for their support on the day of the event. “Last but not least, we would like to thank the municipality and all the volunteers for their efforts in helping Ama Wheelies road safety awareness walk and fund-raiser to be a success,” Molombo said.

All funds will go in aid of the development of Ama Wheelies self-help centre for quadriplegics and paraplegics.
