UPDATE: UMP staff denied access
University of Mpumalanga (UMP) students started a peaceful protest on March 16. The UMP is expected to reopen to staff on Wednesday. Includes soundbite and video.
MBOMBELA -The protesters sang and danced just inside the main gate and staff members were locked outside from last week Thursday.
Campus Representative Council (CRC) secretary, Ms Nonhlanhla Vilakati, explained that funding for accommodation and meals for students who reside off campus, were some of the issues.
“The original catering company, Capitol, had their contract terminated due to poor service delivery in 2015. We were happy with the new caterers, but their contract was terminated without our knowledge last week. The same company we demanded be fired, was brought back, without informing us,” said Vilakati.

Director of marketing and communications at the university, Mr Themba Manana, said on Monday that they were discussing the students’ terms.
Manana said that classes will resume on April 3.
