Cameras are rolling for youth centre’s movie project.

The production of a proudly Nkomazi movie is gaining momentum, with the first scenes having been shot at East Gate and Phosaville last Monday.

KAMHLUSHWA – A cast of about 150 people aged between seven and 70 are working hard to make the Phaphama Youth Centre (PYC) movie project a success.

Auditions were held in April.

Cast members of the siSwati movie Mpumelelo gathered at KaMhlushwa Primary on July 1 for a blessing ceremony before shooting commenced.

During the event, the cast members gave a sneak peek into the movie, which depicts the life of a girl who is left in the care of her stepfather after her mother dies. He remarries and she is abused by her stepmother when he is not around.

Thabiso Zulu and Nelisiwe Sibiya provide community members with a sneek peek of the movie.

The event was supported by the Nkomazi Local Municipality, the Cultural and Creative Industries Federation of South Africa, provincial and national representatives, Mr Johannes Msomi and Mr Zweli Mdakane, Rising Sun TV’s Mr Timothy Zulu and the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation.

Community members were extremely supportive of the project, like Ms Shelly Mawelela, who commended the young people for such a display of talent in Nkomazi, and said the skills they gain will help to support them in future. She urged parents to continue supporting their children in such ventures.

PYC members, who had no funds for the project when they started, are very grateful to the supporters who have helped them get this far. They continue to seek support from the community and funders.
