An update on controversial court cases in White River

• Paul Mathebula and Selby Mabila, the two men accused of kidnapping, robbing and killing Annatjie Myburgh on June 15 last year, will appear in the Mpumalanga High Court again on September 26. Myburgh’s disappearance was followed by a four-day search that involved hundreds of community members. Her body was discovered in the Hazyview/Numbi area on the fourth day. The Pajero she had been driving when she was abducted from her yard was found in the KaBokweni area. Mathebula and Mabila were arrested in the 24 hours that followed.

• The man believed to have shot his ex-girlfriend a week after she obtained a protection order against him, Mr Glen Mtshali (28), appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court for attempted murder last week. According to White River Police spokesman, Sgt Cynthia Mbokodo, Mtshali was denied bail and the case was postponed to August 18.

• Ms Ethel Mdluli and her co-accused, Mr Peter Khoza (52) and Mr Xolani Mngwenya (34), who were charged with the murder of her husband, Mr Solomon Mdluli (57), recently appeared in court. The case was postponed to October 5.

• Gavin Wingrave (51), a well-known ballroom dancing instructor in the Lowveld, walked out of jail yesterday morning, a free man. He allegedly killed a man in self defense on Friday, was set to remain in custody until his bail hearing on August 21.
