Night of a 1000 stars a night to remember
The highly anticipated Night of 1000 Stars was not only "Out of Africa", but out of this world.

MBOMBELA-The Night of a 1000 stars annual CANSA fund-raiser was held at Sonpark Boulevard on Friday night. Guests dressed up according to the theme to up the fun factor, and the participating restaurants went all out to decorate their tables.
The restaurants that saw to the catering for the evening included Turn and Tender, Zest, Magnolia, Orange, A Bica, Cicada, Bundu Lodge, Costa do Sol and Premier Hotel the Winkler. JD Venter and Koos Vermeulen of Kooskook also contributed.
Attendees were treated to a three-course meal and live entertainment. The talented performances ensured that the festivities kept going. The Singing Waiters musical group opened for the night. They were followed by the Soweto String Quartet. Guests were also treated to a fantastic display of drumming and fire dancing by Phoenix Fire and Drum.


According to Sandra Jacobs, organiser of the event, R160 of every ticket sold went towards funding various CANSA projects.There was also an auction. Items included a queen-size Sealy Posturepedic bed-and-base set,a Vodacom tablet, a scenic flight opportunity sponsored by Lowveld Aero Club and Kishugu Lowveld Air Show,a bow-hunting expedition provided by Visagie Group and Bowpro Archery,a massage-and-lunch package at Oliver’s Restaurant and Lodge,a bottle of wine from Rooikat Liquors and venison from Bundu Lodge.

Raffle tickets cost R100 each. R10 000, donated by Land Rover, was won by Daan Breytenbach. Jacobs indicated that they managed to raise R12 000 from raffle ticket sales. Money was also raised from a photo booth and from the Moroccan Barber which offered haircuts for the men.

The prize for the best-dressed couple went to Gary and Carey Friend. The runners-up were Daan and Annemarie Breytenbach. Angelique Rall won the prize for best-dressed female while the runner-up prize went to an individual who went by the stage name of Princess Afaid Azzi. The best-dressed male was Anton van Tonder while the runner-up was Kobus van der Walt.
The award for best starter went to Magnolia, while the award for the best main was won by Turn and Tender. The dessert round went to Magnolia which also won the overall best restaurant. The runner-up was Kooskook.
Approximately R230 000 was raised for CANSA. “We are really grateful to have raised so much. People were really willing to give and to date it is the highest amount that we have raised for this event so far. On behalf of Sonpark I would like to thank all the patrons who helped to make this event a reality and a resounding success,” Jacobs said.
