Standards of living have drastically dropped despite promises of better services prior to the amalgamation of Umjindi and Mbombela municipalities on August 3, 2016.
Residents who have lived in the area for many years complained to Barberton Times about how the standard of living in the historical mining town has deteriorated.

The area seems to be drowning in rubbish as some sections are evidently not cleaned by the municipality.
Residents of both Emjindini and Barberton are dissatisfied with the piles of refuse that are heaped on the streets and in residential areas.
This publication visited both areas.
Streams of sewage ran through some streets, while many corners were covered with uncollected domestic garbage.
