Tracy Todd has new big plans

The beloved and inspirational Tracy has shared plans for her next project, and she is sure her community will help to make it a reality.

WHITE RIVER – The brave lotus flower took some time to explain the full meaning of her book to readers during her talk with radio personality, Gareth Cliff at the recent Lowveld Book Festival.

Tracy Todd managed to get the publication of Brave lotus flower rides the dragon crowd-funded within two weeks.

Publishers are not as keen to publish memoirs by “ordinary” people as they are about books by “the rich and famous”, she pointed out to Cliff.

His memoir, Cliffhanger: confessions of a shock jock, was published at the end of last year.

Todd explained that Tracy means “brave”. Her middle name, Lian, is Chinese for lotus flower. The flower’s journey from the swamp floor to beautifully flowering, mirrors her own: from the devastation of becoming quadriplegic to being an inspiration to all who meet her, and know of her.

The dragon in the title refers to the most frightening thing she has had to face – paralysis. “I haven’t slain the dragon, but I have made peace with it, and learnt to live alongside it,” she said.

Dragon is also the brand of speech recognition she uses to write.

During the conversation she also shared more about her life-changing accident and the road she has travelled since.

She also shared plans for her next project: an assisted-living facility for adults in the Lowveld.

“There are places for children, but where do they go afterwards? Anyone can land up in a wheelchair, needing assistance. Different people need different levels of assistance due to, for instance, suffering head injuries or having Down’s syndrome. Those kids also want to leave their parents’ home.

“I am sure my community will help,” she added, given the unbelievable support they’ve shown her since the accident 17 years ago.

“I am going to drive it and I am sure that is what we are going to do one day.”
