Time for bookworms in the Lowveld to get talking

All passionate readers have one thing in common: an itch to talk about the books they are currently reading, the books they have read and the books they intend to read.

MBOMBELA – Having nothing to read comes close to an existential crisis for many a reader, bringing about a moment in which the very foundation, meaning, purpose and value of life are questioned.

This need to discuss books is evident in Lowvelders‘ enthusiastic support of local book events. The Innibos ATKV Boeke-oase is one such event, and the Sappi Boeke-crawl and ClemenGold Woorde Innituin could be described as annual box-office hits, with tickets sold out in less than no time.

The Lowveld Book Festival has also grown from strength to strength over the past two years and the 2017 event was a huge success.

Both these occasions attest to the demand for a regular platform where reading and books are discussed – not only on an intellectual level, but also in a more relaxed way, merely for the love of books and reading.

Book in my Hand
Book in my Hand was born from this need to engage in meaningful conversations about books, and will appear every last Friday of the month in Lowvelder.

A love for reading does not discriminate on account of language and culture, and Book in my Hand promises to publish articles in both English and Afrikaans. We also plan on discussing a wide variety of subjects, genres, writers and books.

Readers have a voice
The most important aspect or characteristic of Book in my Hand will be discourse. We invite readers and lovers of books and words to contact us with any ideas and opinions. Have you recently read a book worth reading? Do you know of a local published writer?

Do you have an opinion on a book we have written about? Who is your favourite writer and why? Is there a specific book you want us to read and discuss? The possibilities for discussion and conversation are quite overwhelming and not limited to these questions.

If you have a voice, please email Liezel Lüneburg at liezel.luneburg@gmail.com.

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
