Hoërskool Waterkloof claims sevens cup

Hoërskool Bergvlam hosted a very successful J&M Sevens tournament at Mbombela Stadium last weekend.

Hoërskool Waterkloof were crowned champions of the Hoërskool Bergvlam J&M Sevens tournament that took place at Mbombela Stadium over the weekend.

In a close game the u/18 team of Klofies took the cup, playing against Hoërskool Nelspruit with a final score of 24-19. JP Krugell of Waterkloof was crowned man of the match.

Taking home the cup, Waterkloof will play in the Champion of Champions tournament in Rustenburg scheduled for October.

“It was a tough game because most of our players are a year or two younger than the squad from Waterkloof. At one stage it looked like we might come back to beat them, but the two quick tries against us right at the start of the game took their toll in the end,” said coach of NHS, Chris Mans.

According to him, Stefan Smit, who captained the NHS team, has been on form this season and will be watched closely in the year to come as he is showing much potential in both the seven- and 15-man configuration of the game.

In the u/15 division, Bergvlam beat Penryn 29-12 in the final, starring a number of spectacular running tries by the Bervlam players.

Clinton Coetzee, Dannilson Mkatshwa, Lorenzo Southon, Shandro van Rensburg and Mpe Matebula each played their 50th game for the Bergvlam first sevens team on the weekend who took home the semi-final bowl beating Ferrum 17-14.

“The event was definitely a success and our local teams had an opportunity to match their strength against much larger schools and established teams,” said Mans.

“For us at Bergvlam, it was an immense privilege to play host to the schools and it’s with much appreciation that we would like to thank Roelf Kotze (stadium manager) for making available the resources to the schools’ teams,” said Mandy Barnard from Bergvlam.
