Star Schools recognises top matric achievers

With marks like 99 per cent in maths and 98 per cent for physical science on their final report, participants of the RCL Foods sponsored Star Schools programme proved that hard work and a little extra help make a world of a difference.

MALALANE – The top-six matrics in the Star Schools programme were invited to RCL Foods’ Malelane Mill last Wednesday in recognition of their achievements.

Enyonam Klu (Mjokwane Secondary), Sandile Ngomane (Driekoppies Combined), Lebogang Mnisi (Mjokwane Secondary), Lomusha Chemo (DD Mabuza Comprehensive), Mancoba Vilakati (Mtimandze Secondary) and Mancoba Mahlalela (Mgubho Combined) received gift packs and talked about their plans for the future.

Enyonam was also awarded a laptop to help him in his studies this year.

The Star Schools programme has been running for more than a decade and aims to help pupils from grade 10 to 12 from across Nkomazi improve in English, mathematics and science through extra lessons on Saturdays.

The effectiveness of the programme is proved in the fact that all of last year’s matrics passed and programme alumni include engineers, doctors and pharmacists.

The hard work of 2017 yielded amazing results, with two of the learners ending in the top provincial list and four in the national list. Their dedication included studying until late at night and during weekends.

Derek van Niekerk, director of sugar at RCL Foods, told the youngsters that the hard work only starts now, and encouraged them to stay disciplined despite the challenges they will face at university and being in the city. He also told graduates that RCL Foods gives back to the community through programmes like this, and hopes that they will return home after their studies to also help uplift the community.

Van Niekerk invited all learners and schools from Nkomazi to become part of the programme. For more information, contact Musa Mthembu on 072-751-6920.
