Braaiers and golfers bring the heat

Running in conjunction with the braai competition was the golf contest taking place inside the stadium.

The day dawned bright and fair as the braais were lit for the annual Mpumalanga Show’s golf and braai competition at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday.
There were a number of contestants, all of which had their eyes on the prize.

Five winners were chosen, and the rules were as follows: chicken was the compulsory protein, food could not be marinated beforehand and a side dish – freshly made on the day – had to be presented to the judges.

Running in conjunction with the braai competition was the golf contest taking place inside the stadium.

As the food was cooking, so the golf balls were being hit from a vantage point on the opposite side of the stadium.
The top-six highest scores went to the contestants who hit the ball closest to the flag, and a number of keen contestants were trying their luck in this regard.

The ball went astray occasionally, and the “turf” it was placed on was ripped up on more than one occasion. For the most part, the event was a huge success and a lot of laughing and great fun went around among both the onlookers and participants.

Back to the outer area of the stadium, and the braai competition was heating up. With teams such as Lowvelder’s Hot Off the Press, Taribo and If You Can’t Braai It, Don’t Eat It putting their best foot forward, the judges’ task wasn’t an easy one.

They managed, however, to sample all that was on offer and declare the five winners.
Some of the prizes included braai packs, two R5 000 vouchers from Standard Bank, Weber braais and a UT vehicle.

The teams going through to the finals during the Mpumalanga Show, which takes place from August 30 to September 1 are Hot Off the Press, Kleyn Bietjie Braai, If You Can’t Braai It, Don’t Eat It, Tjo-m-pies and Taribo.
