MEC determined to stamp out licencing fraud

MEC Pat Ngomane urged law enforcers to visit driving licence testing stations across the province to ensure no corrupt activities are taking place.

MBOMBELA – Law enforcers should visit all Driving Licence Testing Centres to ensure there is no corruption taking place.

This was a call from community safety, security and liaison MEC, Pat Ngomane, following last Monday’s arrest of five people allegedly involved in corrupt activities at the Victor Khanye Testing Centre in Delmas.

Ngomane said that more intelligence-driven operations should be carried out as people spread rumours about alleged corruption as testing stations across the province.

The five suspects were arrested by the Hawks and anti-corruption officers from the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC). Three are law enforcement officers working as driving licence examiners and two were civilians who acted as coordinators.

They allegedly solicited money from driving licence applicants and issued them with Code 14 driving licences in return.

Ngomane said that this undermined the government’s efforts to promote and improve road safety.

“By issuing driving licences to undeserving people, the officials were actually authorising untrained people to be in control of heavy trucks and buses. These vehicles are transporting dangerous goods and precious lives, meaning that many road users’ lives are put at risk,” he stated.

Ngomane urged people to report any such corrupt activities and people that had been issued with illegal driving licences to come forward to assist the Hawks with their investigation.

Corruption can be reported to the relevant traffic office, the RTMC’s National Inspectorate for Driving License Testing Centres on 012-309-3710 or to Corruption Watch on 0800-023-456, via whatsapp on 072-013-5569 or online on corruptionwatch.org.za.
