Two people injured in accident at traffic lights by Westend Shopping Centre

According to an eyewitness, a Toyota Hilux with four occupants was coming from the direction of White River travelling towards Barberton. “The driver was turning right at the traffic light when the vehicle collided with another Toyota single-cab bakkie with one occupant coming from the opposite direction.”
With the impact the bakkie with the four occupants flew into the air and crashed into a tree, then rolled and landed on its side at the intersection.
The other bakkie veered into the traffic light. Another eyewitness stated that the accident was caused because both of the traffic lights had turned orange at the same time.

Samantha O’Reilly who lives close to the intersection said she heard a crash and then continuous banging. “I did not hear any sound of a vehicle braking. I just heard the banging as the bakkie rolled.
“When I looked out from our balcony, I could see a man helping a child get out of the bakkie. There was another person lying on the road. The paramedics got there fast though… It was within minutes.”
Police spokesman Lt Col Erhard Stroh said both drivers were taken to hospital. “One was taken to Mediclinic Nelspruit and the other to Rob Ferreira Hospital.”
He said SAPS were investigating the cause of the accident.
Nelspruit Concerned Citizens’ John Meintjies said their members were on the scene to assist the emergency teams. Community safety, security and liaison spokesman Moeti Mmusi said motorists should obey the rules and regulations of the road to avoid accidents.
