Police apprehend five for burglary
Charges of burglary were laid against all five suspects and one of them was also charged with the possession of a firearm and ammunition.
A man was the first of five suspects charged for burglary when he was recently arrested at White River Cash Crusaders trying to sell stolen goods.
Following his arrest and more information, White River detectives embarked on an operation and early the next morning four more men were also apprehended.
Charges of burglary were laid against all five suspects and one of them was also charged with the possession of a firearm and ammunition.
They are between the ages of 23 and 43 years. A firearm with ammunition and many other possessions, including a television, Kodak camera, sound system and jewellery were recovered.
The suspects have already appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court. They would have appeared again on Monday for a formal bail application. By the time of going to press, it was not known yet whether it was granted.
Sgt Thabo Ngwenya is the investigating officer.
In another statement, the White River police also appealed to the community to refrain from hitchhiking as it puts their lives in danger.
This warning was issued after a number of incidents were reported at the station. People there were being robbed of their belongings by suspects who were acting as Good Samaritans and giving lifts to hitchhikers.
“We urge community members to at least take registration numbers and note the colour and make of vehicles of people giving them rides and give the details to family members. It will assist with any investigations that may follow,” Sgt Cynthia Mbokodo said.
