Sport the ultimate winner at Barberton Junior rugby tournament
The Bouwer Park rugby field was awash with colour on March 9 as six schools arrived there to compete in the annual Junior Rugby Tournament.
The Bouwer Park rugby field was awash with colour on March 9 as six schools arrived there to compete in the annual Junior Rugby Tournament.
The schools represented at the tournament were Numbi, Uplands, Vrede, Bergland, Laerskool Nelspruit and Barberton and the young players participated in the u/9, u/11 and u/13 categories.
For the most part, the teams were evenly matched, and there were a number of notable team and individual performances which stood out on the day. There were tries aplenty and the spectators and parents cheered their teams on while the refereeing was firm, but fair.

Overall, 24 matches were played over 10 minutes per game, and a five-minute half-time break to allow the players to catch their breaths. Medical personnel were on standby throughout the day and thankfully no major injuries were sustained by any of the players.
An encouraging sign was the parents who were there to support their children who gave their all on the field. The Barberton teams acquitted themselves well on the field and flew the flag high with their competitive spirit.

The ultimate winners on the day was the enthusiasm of the players and their conduct on the field which spoke volumes about the next generation of rugby players who will hopefully ply their trade for South Africa. The results were as follows :
