Alert neighbour saves the lives of mother and child in hijacking

The would-be hijackers robbed the victim of her belongings in front of her home and fired two shots.

It is a scathing indictment on our society when the lives of women and children are no longer held sacred. Criminals intent on sowing fear prey on law-abiding citizens with nary a thought for the consequences of their actions.

A Nelspruit mother, who was travelling along Percy Fitzpatrick Stree,t experienced firsthand the callousness of criminals on the prowl on March 31. At about 18:30, two men approached the vehicle she was travelling in, in an apparent attempt to hijack the car.

A neighbour’s quick thinking helped to foil the hijacking.

The woman pressed the hooter twice to alert neighbours to the life threatening situation she found herself in, and her efforts were rewarded when an alert neighbour contacted Hi-Tech Security regional operations manager, Callum MacPherson. The would-be hijackers robbed the victim of her belongings in front of her home and fired two shots.

As fate would have it, neither the woman or her child were struck by the bullets and the attackers fled on foot. According to MacPherson, it is believed that a silver VW Polo was involved during the incident. The bullets struck the car’s windows and doors, missing the mother and child inside.

The would-be hijackers fled the scene on foot.

The family are still in shock after the ordeal and have lodged a case at the Nelspruit Police Station. The woman’s husband has requested that their names be omitted from the article as the family are in shock and still coming to terms with the brazen manner in which the attack was carried out.

He expressed his thanks and appreciation to the quick thinking neighbour and Hi-Tech Security, whose actions spared the lives of his child and wife.
