Du Toit-Smuts and Partners and Lowvelder Golf Day has locals digging deep for charity
As the venue filled up, the serious nature of the day’s event was brought home by Du Toit-Smuts and Partners’ executive partner, Schalk Rheeder.

The Mbombela Golf Club was teeming with activity last week Friday during the annual Du Toit-Smuts and Partners and Lowvelder Golf Day. The who’s who of the Lowveld business scene were rubbing shoulders on and off the green in a bid to raise funds for a host of local charities.
The hive of activity is undoubtedly the biggest highlight on the Lowveld social and sporting scene, as sponsors entered their players to benefit a number of worthy causes. The day was also held in a show of support for the South African Springbok team in Japan for the Rugby World Cup. The course was filled with the distinct green and gold colours of the Boks, and the different sponsors added a few quirky touches to the game.

Players were required to play a few interesting and fun games at each hole before being allowed to tee off, and faced fun penalties if they failed. The afternoon allowed businesses to connect and network away from the office in a more relaxed environment. This afforded people who normally only interacted telephonically the opportunity to see each other face to face, away from the stifling offices and boardrooms.
In typical Lowvelder fashion, the social setting provided a glimpse into what services and products the different businesses offer in a convivial atmosphere. As proceedings drew to a close, the participants made their way to the 19th hole where it is customary to have a celebratory drink after a long afternoon on the course.

As the venue filled up, the serious nature of the day’s event was brought home by Du Toit-Smuts and Partners’ executive partner, Schalk Rheeder, who said, “It is an exceptional privilege for us to take ownership of the second oldest Golf Day at the Mbombela Golf Club.
“Du Toit-Smuts and Partners have been entrenched in the Lowveld for the past 43 years and the Lowvelder has a 140-year history in Mbombela.” Rheeder added that the two pillars on which the company is founded were service delivery and building relationships within the community. “We cherish these relationships, because it allows doors to be opened.”

The Mbombela Golf Club CEO, Darren Plumb, also took to the podium and said that the recent rains contributed to a beautiful course. He singled out Mari van der Westhuizen for her involvement in the planning and execution of the Golf Day and presented her with a bouquet of flowers in thanks.
Irma Green, Caxton national group editor, thanked everyone present for making the day a success. “Thank you to the main sponsor, Du Toit-Smuts and Partners for their involvement. The money raised is for a good cause and will benefit deserving charities in the Lowveld who make a difference in the lives of people they help every day.
“Lowvelder is proud to be associated with the day and thanks you for your continued support throughout the years.”
