Covid case: Woman tests positive for virus at local mine

The woman was tested on-site and discovered to have contracted the virus.

LYDENBURG/BURGERSFORT – A female worker has tested positive for Covid-19 at one of the local mines.

The woman, who had returned for her shift after the lockdown period, was screened and subsequently isolated after she displayed symptoms of the virus.

She was tested for the pathogen on April 29 at one of the on-site clinics and found to be infected. This is the second case of Covid-19 recorded in the Sekhukhune District Municipality and the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality.

Steelburger/Lydenburg News was informed of the above by various reliable sources, including a source at the clinic where the woman was screened and tested.

Since the news broke, other mines in the area have issued workers with notices regarding the confirmed case, urging employees to take extra precautions.

The Limpopo Department of Health said that it could not confirm or deny the report. Neil Shikwambana, the department spokesman, said Limpopo had 37 cases as of May 2.

On April 26 Limpopo MEC for health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, confirmed that a 55-year-old man succumbed to the virus at a private surgery in Burgersfort.

The newspaper tried to make contact with the mine to gain insight into the matter. Management was, however, still in a meeting discussing the way forward and could thus not provide feedback by the time of going to print.

As soon as a response from the mine’s management has been received, more information will be made available.
