Thulamahashe community now enjoys clean drinking water

In celebrating and honouring the former head of state, Nelson Mandela, SBS Solutions SA, through the South African Local Government Association (Salga), donated and installed a 5 000L water tank that will actively bring much-needed relief to the area's water challenges.

The area has been faced with water rationing for quite some time due to the low water pressure from the Thulamahashe Water Treatment Works as a result of low river levels.

The Bushbuckridge Local Municipality (BLM) believes that the donation will go a long way to ensure enough water storage and everyday supply to the affected community. The donated water tanker will see over 250 families gain access to water daily.

BLM’s executive mayor, Cllr Sylvia Nxumalo, and council speaker, Cllr Rodah Raganya, take a sip of the clean water.

During the official handover held at the Thulamahashe Old Stadium on Thursday, BLM’s executive mayor, Cllr Sylvia Nxumalo, expressed her gratitude for the donation and said it was a milestone in achieving a constitutional right for the Thulamahashe community.

“We appreciate the gesture by SBS Solutions SA and Salga, who have ensured that water rationing for the community becomes a thing of the past. We are also grateful for the partnership that saw water security being provided for the people and we are hopeful that this will go a long way. I urge the people of Thulamahashe to ensure this precious gift stays in good hands and to refrain from torching government and private sector property,” said Nxumalo.

Blessed Nkomo, a community member, said this donation came at an opportune time when the community was battling with water challenges for months. “This must really be applauded. It shows that our government is really committed to serving our communities. We will no longer have to travel long distances for water.”
