According to Capt Zandile Gqawa, the spokesperson for the Nelspruit SAPS, the man appeared on charges of reckless and negligent driving, and failing to stop after an accident.

The outcome of the appearance is still unknown.

Gqawa said the child that was hit in the accident is a five-year-old boy. He has since been transferred to a hospital in Pretoria where he is in the ICU.

She said she was informed this morning that the boy was still unconscious.
