Storm causes power outage in Mbombela, some roads inaccessible

After storm damage at the Delta substation, multiple areas are left without power. There is no estimated time for repairs yet.

The City of Mbombela (CoM) said major power outages were caused by damages at the Delta substation. It lost some major equipment on the 33KV and 11KV network due to a direct hit by lightning.

Spares are being sourced as they are not readily available. The downtime cannot be estimated at this stage.

“The teams are on the ground fixing what can be fixed while sourcing for other spares, however,” said CoM.

Steiltes, Valencia, Nelsville, Orchards, KaMagugu, Bateleur and the surrounding areas are affected and have been without power since late last night.

“It must be noted that other services such as water supply are affected by the outage as the Water Treatment Works does not have electricity.

“We are also aware of the damages caused to road infrastructure and people’s dwellings as a result of the storm and heavy downpours in the past 24 hours.

“Our disaster management teams are out to assess and provide relief where possible.”

The City said it would keep its residents updated on the progress made.
