Creativity and art endure despite challenges

HCN Art Studio held its annual year-end exhibition on November 11 at its studio in Sheffield Estate.

HCN Art Studio contained beautiful artworks that had been produced in art classes these past two years as part of its annual year-end exhibition.

Although Covid-19 proved challenging, the spirit to paint and create had clearly not died.

According to the art teacher, Hilke Nel, she tries to encourage her students to explore and experiment with various mediums. Each artwork has its individual character, whether it is superrealism or expressionism.

“There really is a lot of talent in the Lowveld, and it is lovely to see the enthusiasm to create. I not only teach drawing and painting techniques in all mediums, but also encourage everyone to share ideas and explore different techniques.

“I try not to be too rigid in my teaching methods. I love sharing my knowledge with my students and being part of their creative journey.”

The classes are attended on a weekly basis, and when new students enrol, they start with the basic elements of art.

“I believe in creating a sturdy foundation when beginning a piece of art, with a good knowledge in space, depth, colour mixing and drawing,” said Nel.
