How to keep your pet calm during fireworks

Most animals find fireworks to be scary. Here are some of the simple suggestions you can do to help your pet deal with this fear.

How to calm dogs during fireworks:

Provide your dog with a safe haven. This should be a quiet place in the house where they feel safe and in control. Place their toys and bed in this area. Don’t interfere with your dog when he is in this area.

Make sure to close all windows and curtains of the house to muffle the sound of fireworks, and that they cannot see any flashes outside.

Put on some music or TV to mask the loud sounds.

You could also talk to your vet to prescribe calming medication suitable for your dog.

Microchip your dog in case he is startled and flees outside.

How to calm cats during fireworks:

Provide your cat a hiding place in your home, such as under some furniture or in a quiet corner.

Do not try and tempt your cat out of their hiding places, as this will be more stressful for them.

Consider keeping them in when fireworks are displayed, as they can become more stressed being outside at this time.

Microchip your cats in case they are startled and flee.

How to help small animals during fireworks:

Partly cover outside cages and pens with blankets or towels to create an area that is soundproofed and hidden, where they can feel safe, but allow another area for the animals to look out.

Provide bedding for small animals to burrow in.

Consider bringing them indoors during this time.
