No arrests yet in R40 accident that killed Lowveld couple
Charlene Miljo (35) and Kevin Schwan (27) were both killed instantly when a grey blue Volvo collided with their car on the Barberton Road, just before Church Unlimited at around 02:22 on January 29.
Police have said they are still investigating the circumstances surrounding a tragic accident on the Barberton Road on January 29 that left a Lowveld couple dead.
The couple returned from a night out and were just 200 metres from their home when tragedy struck. The Nelspruit police confirmed that a case of culpable homicide had been opened against the driver of the Volvo and that the matter was still being investigated.
“No arrests have been made and police are still busy with the investigation,” said the Nelspruit Police Station spokesperson, Capt Zandile Gqawa.

“We are still waiting for some witnesses’ statements then the docket will be taken to court for decision (on whether to prosecute the driver or not),” she said.
The spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Moeti Mmusi, had said previously that the accident involved only two cars, and the police had taken down the details of the driver before letting him climb into the vehicle of a friend and leave the scene.
Friends of the couple, Charné Meintjes and Jacques du Toit, who have been in constant contact with Miljo’s father and siblings, said they had not received feedback from police on the investigation and that they hoped to receive more information surrounding the case from police.
A memorial service was held for Miljo on February 4, and the family and friends of Schwan said their final goodbyes on February 9.
