New development in Mbombela’s Koenic Dunlop murder case
Four suspects had been arrested for Riaan van der Sandt's murder in August.
There is a new development in the murder of Koenic Dunlop Zone Nelspruit’s owner, Riaan van der Sandt.
Currently, four suspects are in custody, but according to information received by Lowvelder, a fifth suspect, whom the police have been on the lookout for, was arrested in an unrelated matter on Monday November 28. The man is still in custody.
A provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said he could not comment on the possible linking of a suspect until their processes had been concluded.
The other four suspects, Alex Tsepo Phoku, Sizwe Mazibuko, Makhosi Bhiya and Nhlanhla Mkhabela, were arrested on August 11 following Van der Sandt’s murder on August 5.

A statement at that time by Mohlala, said on the day of the murder, a group of armed suspects had stormed Van der Sandt’s business at about 16:00 when he and his employees were preparing to close for the day.
It is alleged that both Van der Sandt and his staff were held at gunpoint. Another employee was assaulted and forced to lead the robbers to the safe.
“Their actions resulted in an altercation between one suspect and the business owner,” said Mohlala. Van der Sandt was then shot.
His family held his memorial service at Communio Church on August 13.
