Lydenburg popcorn factory goes up in flames

The explosion of five gas cylinders could allegedly have caused the fire to spread quicker.

A fire started on the premises of a popcorn factory in Breytenbach Street, involving the explosion of about five gas cylinders, which allegedly aggravated the spread of the blaze and caused further structural damage in the late hours of Friday December 23.

Fire and emergency services responded to the scene. Copious amounts of high expansion foam were utilised by Thaba Chweu Fire and Emergency Services to extinguish the blaze.

According to a statement by Thaba Chweu Fire and Emergency Services, the foam decreases the initial impact of the fire to prevent its reignition. It stops the oxygen from reigniting the fire, cooling the heat created by consumable material.

No injuries were reported. The case is still under investigation by local law enforcement agencies.
