WATCH: Young woman from Lydenburg fatally wounded during robbery

The police are searching for a group of suspects in connection with a killing, two armed robberies and breaking into a liquor store.

The Lydenburg SAPS has launched a manhunt after 20-year-old Megan Griesel was killed in the early hours of this morning, October 21.

Security footage from Lydenburg Convenience Engen Garage, near The Heads Shopping Complex, shows about 10 armed suspects jumping off a white Isuzu single-cab bakkie at the filling station.

The suspects bombed its drop safe and proceeded to the Quest Garage, about 500m from Engen and situated at The Heads. The police haven’t been able to confirm if they managed to open the safe and make off with its contents.

The suspects robbed the Quest cashiers at gunpoint. While they were doing so, they spotted Griesel’s vehicle and started shooting at it.

She had been entering a traffic circle, between Engen and Quest, on her way home.

According to the Lydenburg police’s spokesperson, Sergeant Cave Dilebo, the robbers may have mistaken Griesel’s car for that of a security company’s. Dilebo confirmed that the victim had been fatally wounded during the shooting.

The suspects also broke into Checkers Liquor at The Heads and stole various boxes of alcohol.

The police are searching for the robbers, and the bakkie. According to them, it was last seen travelling in the direction of Long Tom Pass. Dilebo said they are pursuing all leads.

If anyone has any information, they can contact the police on 013 235 2233.

The investigation continues.
