House fire claims lives of beloved pets in Mbombela
A fire that destroyed a house in Hunter Street claimed the lives of two dogs, Rover and Dixie. Despite efforts from rescue teams, the flames engulfed their rented home, leaving behind a scene of heartbreak.
A house in 36 Hunter Street in Mbombela was severely damaged in a fire on Friday February 2.
Bryan Murray-Rodgers of the Canine Unity SA drove past the house at around 08:20 and noticed the flames. Upon entering the premises, he heard dogs barking inside, but couldn’t rescue them due to the flames making entry impossible.
The two dogs, Rover (one year old) and Dixie (three months) died in the fire. Their remains were discovered near a window, suggesting an attempt to escape.
O’Brian Collins and his mother Amanda, who lived in the house, arrived at the scene and learnt about the heartbreaking loss of their dogs. Overcome with grief, they were comforted and escorted away as Nelspruit SPCA removed the pets’ remains.
Canine Unity SA, Nelspruit Concerned Citizens, Netstar, Securicon, ER 24 and Nelspruit Fire Department responded to the incident.
The house that the Collins rented sustained severe damage, with most of it consumed by the fire.
The Nelspruit Fire Department reported that the cause of the fire remains undetermined, but they suspect an electrical fault.
