Child Welfare Nelspruit discusses parent-child relationships over a cuppa
The tea party sought to tackle issues faced by child welfare organisations through prayer and fundraising for annual programmes.
The second annual Tea and Parenting Empowerment Prayer and Fundraiser, hosted by Child Welfare Nelspruit at Church Unlimited on Saturday February 24, saw parents and those passionate about childcare uplift one another over a cup of tea.
Various topics were discussed, including how parents can enhance and maintain a deep connection with their child, deal with a defiant child, foster emotional growth in a child and invest in a family spirituality for external impact, as well as the dynamics of parenting.
This year’s theme was praying for the social ills that affect communities. The Child Welfare Nelspruit’s office manager, Nomfundo Myeza, said: “This was a prayer for the children and families of Mpumalanga aimed at curbing all forms of social ills faced by society. The empowerment event was initiated as an additional aspect to educate the public about the social ills and awareness raised on issues of child abuse and domestic violence. However, we have not seen any change or improvement in the lives of our clients and the community we serve. Hence, the idea for prayers was proposed, for women to come together and pray for God’s divine intervention. Also, that we may find a solution towards all the difficulties we are facing as an organisation and as a nation at large.”

Myeza said from 2021 to 2023, Child Welfare Nelspruit had to deal with a rise in child abandonment, child sexual abuse, reported cases of children living in domestic violent homes, bullying in schools and teenage pregnancy.
“The government has put in place so many programmes aimed at addressing the abuse of women and children. We do our best to meet the demands of our services, and it is acknowledged that prayer is an important source of support and healing when we feel emotionally drained and overwhelmed.”

Myeza said the fundraising activity was aimed at supplementing funds towards assisting abandoned babies, therapy for severely abused children, stationery and uniforms for those living in destitute conditions as well as travelling costs to children’s homes.
