Man drowns in Mhala while allegedly setting up fishing nets

The Ehlanzeni Police Diving Unit, with the assistance of the Bushbuckridge Fire and Rescue Department, recovered the man's body from a dam in Mhala on Tuesday April 2.

The body of a man was recovered from a dam in Mhala on Tuesday morning, April 2, after he had reportedly drowned on Monday April 1 while trying to set up fishing nets among the reeds.

The Ehlanzeni Police Diving Unit’s Captain Pottie Potgieter said they recovered the body at about 10:00 the following day with the assistance of the Bushbuckridge Fire and Rescue Department.

Potgieter said the man had allegedly been setting up fishing nets in the water and he had swum out to tie one side of the nets to some reeds. He said the man had reportedly been treading water, became tired and unfortunately drowned. Potgieter added that the area of water where this happened was about five metres deep.

Potgieter said the man was thought to have drowned at about 14:00 on Monday, however, the unit only received the call at about 18:00 that night and went out to the scene early on Tuesday morning.

The man’s body was recovered from a body of water in Mhala by the Ehlanzeni Police Diving Unit and the Bushbuckridge Fire and Rescue Department.
