Limpopo top cop warns about latest scam
The Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said victims are phoned by perpetrators claiming they were paid to kill them and demanding money to spare their lives.
The Limpopo SAPS has appealed to community members to avoid paying off swindlers who claim to have been sent to kill them.
The Limpopo police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has issued a warning to the public to be aware of a scam in which victims are phoned by perpetrators claiming they were paid to kill them, and demanding money to spare their lives.
Hadebe said three public servants have reported similar incidents in recent weeks.
“Two businessmen also received telephone calls from a person impersonating a Hawks employee.”
He further alleged that he was investigating their cases, and demanded money from them to avoid prosecution.
She appealed to the community to guard against these scammers.
“The SAPS advises citizens who receive such suspicious calls to rather verify the caller identity by asking for their names and location. Contact the police station that the scammer claims to be stationed at to verify whether there is a legitimate warrant of arrest out for you or whether the supposed official works there. Do not pay them anything as the legitimate police will never demand cash in exchange for their services,” said Hadebe.
She advised community members to report incidents to the nearest police station, to Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or on the My SAPS app.
