Olympic fun and games for Herfsakker residents

Several Herfsakker residents showed they still have a lot of spring in their step, participating in their own Olympic Games and being awarded medals.

Bringing home the spirit of the Olympic Games, SAVF Herfsakker held its very own Olympics day on Friday, August 2.

Four spirited teams of up to six members showed their mettle in five sporting disciplines, including bokdrolspoeg, a ring toss version of jukskei, basketball, toy gun shooting and rubber chicken toss. Up for grabs were individual gold, silver and bronze medal honours as well as a handsome prize purse of chocolate gold coins.

While hitting the mark at the makeshift shooting range proved to be the most challenging, the residents thoroughly enjoyed the bokdrolspoeg, with some athletes even eating the Astros rather than projectile-spitting them.

The organisers, Riana Joubert of Herfsakker and mother-and-daughter duo Anna-Marie and Leichan Reed, thought it would be a good idea to spice up the residents’ lives by bringing these games home, since they had already been keenly following the Paris games on television.

The initiative proved to be a huge morale boost that ignited infectious levels of excitement. Basketball gold medallist Jimmy de Pradines even blew a kiss to the photographer at the medal presentation.

Other gold medallists included Ria Meintjies (rubber chicken toss), Marie Roets (bokdrolspoeg), Gerda Strydom (shooting) and Fanie Olivier (ring toss/jukskei). Overall team honours went to the red team consisting of Pottie Potgieter, Sieg de Jong, Mart Thornhill, Fanie Olivier, Elzabé Otto and Herma Kruger, led by team captain Riana Joubert.
