Hazyview’s Summerhill Prep puts fun into learning

The school included the Field Guide Association of Southern Africa as part of the Grade Six and Seven geography curricula to ensure the school remains relevant.

Summerhill Prep School in Hazyview always strives to make learning fun and, most importantly, the teaching at the school remains relevant.

According to the school principal, Cheryl Calmeyer, the school incorporates the Field Guide Association of Southern Africa (Fgasa) as part of the Grade Six and Seven geography curricula. They have been doing this for more than a decade.

“It makes sense, being on the doorstep of the Kruger National Park. At the end of Grade Seven, they write the external Fgasa junior exam and if they pass, become Fgasa Nature Ambassadors, which they can choose to take further. Our Grade Sevens loved ‘mining’ for iron in our stream with magnets during August. As a fully independent school, we can add to the standard curriculum to ensure our learning remains relevant, which is our primary goal,” she said.
