Guys’ trip from Cape to Stuttgart gains momentum
Kobus Esterhuizen and Marius Burger Lourens are not backing down from their adventure from South Africa to Germany in January.
The 1996 Mercedes-Benz set to take on a trip from Cape Town to Stuttgart, Germany, is almost completely covered with signatures by local businesses, organisations and individuals, all wanting in on the action.
Kobus Esterhuizen and Marius Burger Lourens, originally from Cape Town, are still preparing for their adventure in January. Since they had introduced this concept to the public more than a month ago, many locals, including businesses and organisations, have been supporting them.
“The plan is still intact. We are inviting everyone now to sign the car and attach a logo sticker, and the car will be handed over to the museum with all the signatures all over it. We’ve received a great reception whenever we’ve driven the car around and on our Facebook page, Vagabond Travels. People are loving the idea,” Esterhuizen said.

They said the aim of the trip is to visit countries along the route to Stuttgart, to meet new people and get some conversations going – a typical guys’ trip.
They caught some of the Bok fever at the end of September and managed to get some Springboks’ signatures before they departed after their 2024 Castle Lager Rugby Championship win against Los Pumas.
“We met one of the players at Mediclinic Nelspruit and we spoke to him and told him about our trip. We asked if we could get some signatures on the car. We preserved them on the bonnet, so they will last even longer. It was an amazing experience to meet the players and to have them show support for our craziness,” Lourens said.

The guys had no financial plan for this trip, however, several businesses have chipped in to sponsor them. “Even more businesses and individuals are coming on board. We have been approached by many people asking how can they donate towards our expenses and we have managed to acquire a SnapScan QR code for that,” Lourens said.

Esterhuizen said so far they have planned to visit Mozambique. They will then drive across to Namibia and continue due north from there. “We are not backing down from this. We are committed to live in our car for the duration of the trip. We are excited for the adventures that await us,” he said.
