The Mayoral Sports Development Tournament was held on September 28 in Nkomazi to encourage the youth to participate in various sports.

The Mayoral Sports Development Tournament, known as the Mayoral Cup, is a programme by the Nkomazi Local Municipality’s (NLM) executive mayor, Phindile Magagula, to get youngsters to participate and compete in different sporting codes.

Roots Butchery participated in this year’s tournament finals on September 28.

Roots Butchery sponsored the event. It provided hot dog rolls, Vienna sausages and bottled water. According to the manager, Daniel Ponte, this was their way of supporting the youngsters and ensuring the tournament ran smoothly.

“Our community involvement prompted us to jump in with this programme. What better way to do that than ensuring the participants were both fed and hydrated? It was a great pleasure to witness the youngsters get onto the pitch and showcase their talents,” said Ponte.

The tournament included various sporting codes such as football, netball, basketball and chess. Ponte said they were honoured to be able to contribute positively to the community.

“When learners participate in sporting activities, it takes up much of their time after school. This is an impactful way to get them off the streets and save them from a lot of trouble. Sports participation is pivotal in encouraging learners to love and enjoy being at school, and this tournament is an opportunity for them to compete and showcase their skills. Most sports stars discover and hone their talents at school level, and who knows, the next big personality might just come from this very tournament,” he added.
