White River Flying Squad recovers two stolen cars and a firearm
The police arrested a suspect in the first recovery, but are still on the hunt for the perpetrator in the second incident.
A foreign national (32) is expected to appear in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court soon following his arrest at the R40/R38 junction on Thursday, October 24, for being in the possession of a reported stolen vehicle.
Some White River Flying Squad members recovered two vehicles and a firearm on the R40 within 24 hours.
According to a provincial police spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi, some Flying Squad members were busy with their normal patrol duties when they received information from a vehicle tracking company regarding a car which was reported stolen in Westville, KwaZulu-Natal.
“The vehicle was travelling from Badplaas [eManzana] in the direction of Barberton. The members responded to a call about a white BMW X3 that matched the description of the car that was stolen from Westville. The driver could not explain the circumstances through which he got the vehicle and was arrested. The police cannot rule out possibilities of adding other charges,” he said.

According to Nkosi, the suspects court date has not been confirmed yet.
The other recovery came a day later, when the White River Flying Squad recovered a Toyota Yaris that was hijacked in Barberton.
The officers were conducting their normal patrol duties at about 23:00 on Thursday, October 24, when they stopped a vehicle on the R40 near Hilltop.

“The driver stopped, but fled from the vehicle and disappeared into the bushes. When an investigation was conducted, the SAPS realised the vehicle was hijacked in Barberton.
“A firearm was also recovered a stone’s throw away from where the vehicle was stopped. Both were seized for further investigation,” Nkosi said.
