The school has had a total of 19 principals over its 120 years.
White River Primary School enjoyed a celebration befitting its 120th birthday with a fine event in the school hall on Saturday, November 9.
Many people who have special ties with the school were present, including past and present personnel, supporters of the school, parents, past learners and representatives of the Department of Education.
The attendees ensured they dressed to the nines for the evening, too, as the dress code was strictly formal and everyone ensured they adhered to the theme. They were also regaled with stories of the school’s colourful and dynamic past, which featured many brilliant tales over the past 120 years.
The school was officially founded in 1904, making it the second oldest school in the Lowveld after only Barberton Primary School, which is a year older. In that 120-year time frame, the school has been led by a total of 19 principals, with the longest serving being Frannie van der Riet, who was principal for almost two decades up until his retirement in 2020.
Van der Riet spoke during the event, sharing many fond memories of his time at the school, which spanned 41 years (18 as principal). White River Primary School has also come a long way since it laid down its roots in 1904, starting with fewer than 50 learners and now having roughly 1 200 in its classrooms.
“This school holds a special place in the heart of the White River community, and I am privileged to be a part of its history,” said the current school principal, Rian Cooper. “White River Primary is an incredibly special school and I am proud of everyone who has been involved in getting us to where we are today.”
