West Acres substation shut down for maintenance

The City of Mbombela hopes to complete the work by the end of business on Wednesday, January 8.

Some maintenance work that includes the installation of a new switchgear and the replacement of some old panels have started at the West Acres substation this morning, January 7.

Several residential areas that depend on this substation have been affected by the resulting power outage. The City of Mbombela (CoM) had made timeous announcements regarding the planned repairs and maintenance.

The CoM has announced that all old panels were successfully removed and that the area was being prepared for the installation of the new ones.

Joseph Ngala, the CoM’s spokesperson, said these repairs were necessary.

“Some of the panels are over 50 years old, hence they have to be replaced.”

He said the team is working around the clock to get the work done. He also confirmed that they were progressing right on schedule.

Ngala said the CoM hopes to complete the work by end of business tomorrow, January 8.

“We appreciate residents’ co-operation and understanding on this matter. This work is necessary to avoid future unplanned outages and to maximise the efficiency of our infrastructure,” Ngala concluded.
