White River’s knitwits blanket those in need with love
The organisation's branch in White River had a productive year in 2024 that benefitted those in need greatly.
After 2024 being a bumper year of making beautiful blankets, beanies, scarves, teddies and more, volunteer organisation 67 Blankets White River is ready to take 2025 by storm.
The organisation, which is made up of 72 members who call themselves ‘knitwits’, had two fantastic handovers last year, and spread their gifts far and wide. Belfast Children’s Home was blessed with beautiful blankets for all the children and carers. Several Lydenburg children received blankets and teddies.
“The highlight for many of us, however, was a visit to Care for Wild Sanctuary on the Barberton road where the CEO, Petronella Nieuwoudt, was given 80 blankets for her precious rhinos, their carers and the surrounding community,” said 67 Blankets’ Penny Boden.

The knitwits never sleep, and with the encouragement of benefactor Ethne Cameron, a branch has been started in Victoria Falls. “This branch has a pile of blankets ready in preparation for the official launch in June,” Boden said.
“A second rural group, the Mapora Queens, has been launched under the supervision of Zodwa Shabangu, with Cameron’s backing. Their pile of blankets is growing, and these ladies are so proud to be involved in such a wonderful movement.”
The ladies aptly rounded off their great 2024 with a special event in the movie house at Casterbridge. Snack packs were organised by 67 Blankets ambassador Kim Buckland, and the knitwits settled in for a morning of chilled fun.
“The movie chosen was most apt – A Stitch in Time – which got the girls laughing, crying and debating! Our ladies really deserved this treat, including 11 gogos from outside White River.”
Looking ahead, 67 Blankets White River is anticipating a blockbuster year in 2025. “March 20 is World International Happiness Day, and 67 Blankets is going to have a display of thousands of blankets in Gqeberha,” Boden said.

“White River is proud to be able to send 110 beautiful blankets to support this event. 67 Blankets White River celebrates its 10th birthday in 2025, and to kick this off, we have plans to erect the largest crocheted Easter egg, which will be on display at Casterbridge over Easter.”
The ladies welcome all things knitting- and crocheting-related, and everyone is welcome to join them at their monthly gatherings on the third Tuesday of every month. Contact Boden for more information on 082 875 6691.
