Four young bull elephants that had crossed over into South Africa are now safely back in Mozambique
The elephants were spotted in sugar-cane fields about 10km from Komatipoort
The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) has confirmed that the four young bull elephants that had wondered from Mozambique into South Africa have been herded back into their country.
The MTPA spokesperson, Simphiwe Shungube, told Lowveld Media that the elephants were spotted in sugar-cane farms near Komatipoort yesterday (Wednesday, March 5).
After getting the information, our team rushed to the scene to assess and monitor the situation. Our stakeholders from Hoedspruit assisted in making sure these animals were herded back to Mozambique where they had come from,” said Shungube.
“Let us also emphasise that they were vagrant elephants and we are pleased that they are safely back home without facing any harm. They were herded back today (Thursday, March 6),” added Shungube.
An elephant was attacked by residents in Matsulu just over a year ago and was killed and butchered for its meat.
